Prep Your Home For The Winter

By November 9, 2015August 13th, 2018Uncategorized

Use these tips to get your house ready for cold winter temperatures in Wisconsin.

As the outside temperatures continue to drop, you may find yourself reaching for your thermostat more and more. While that is typically the fastest way to warm up, it can also lead to a much bigger heating bill. To help stay warm and get your house ready for the cold, keep these home winterizing tips in mind:

  • Cover the drafts – roll up a bath towel or make your own draft snake to keep the colder outside temperatures from creeping into your house. Drafts can waste up to 30 percent of your energy use.
  • Turn your fans around – did you know that your ceiling fans can help to keep you warm and cozy? Reverse your ceiling fan so that it is spinning clockwise to push the warm air that has risen to your ceiling down into the living area of your home.
  • Clean your rain gutters – if you have made it this far without cleaning out your rain gutters, you shouldn’t take any more chances. Take a weekend to clean out your rain gutters so that rain and snow can make its way off your roof and away from your house. Plus, the sooner you clear them out, the warmer you will be.
  • Insulate your pipes – make sure all of your pipes are properly insulated to keep them from freezing. You can buy specific pipe foam to cover your pipes or use insulating tape to keep the water flowing into your house. While checking your pipes, it is the perfect time to make sure all of your outside faucets are turned off and covered.

While getting your house ready for the cold, it is the perfect time to look over your home insurance policy to ensure that you have the right amount of coverage for any unfortunate situation you may run into this season.
