Know these open enrollment deadlines to ensure you have the right amount of coverage for 2016.
If you want your health insurance coverage to start on January 1st, you only have a few more days to sign up for coverage! Even though you have more than a month until open enrollment ends, you would have had to have to sign up for a health insurance by December 15th in order for your coverage to start on January 1st.
It’s not too late for coverage, there are a few more dates that you should keep in mind to help you successfully navigate open enrollment to get the health coverage you deserve, including:
- January 1st – the first day that your new coverage can start if you enrolled in a plan on or before December 15th.
- January 15th – the last day that you can change your coverage or enroll in a new plan in order for your coverage to start on February 1, 2016.
- January 31st – the last day of the 2016 open enrollment period and the last day that you can sign up for coverage. Any changes that you make to your plan or new coverage that you invest in between January 16th and January 31st will start on March 1st.
If you do not sign up for health insurance during the open enrollment period, you will have to wait until the next open enrollment period to sign up for coverage. The only way you can enroll in a policy outside of the open enrollment period is if you qualify for a special enrollment period.
